Time and milestones keep flying by. Valentine’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Celebrations of Life, Trump found liable for sexual abuse… Hard to keep up with it all!

And now Mother’s Day is already upon us. If you’re like me, you have family spread out across who knows where. Over the years, I haven’t been able to see my familia for quite a while now. But most of us feel our mom’s presence still managing to keep us intact. I know we’ll all finally be able to reunite in June, and I’m very much looking forward to that.

In the meantime, if you’re lucky, you can spend sweet moments with your mom this Sunday, May 14, at La Costanera in Half Moon Bay. Treat her to a Peruvian brunch on the harbor. ¡Hola, mi Gente!

I hate tax season.

But you know what helps me get through it? Hiking. I’m not able to get to those trails as often as I used to with this gig schedule of mine, but after all these rains, it’s interesting to see how many uprooted trees have altered so many trails and parks throughout the Bay Area. What I love about the trails after the phenomenon of these atmospheric rivers is the sound and sights of so many heavily flowing streams throughout parklands. It helps one re-set. If you haven’t done it yet, go seek out a good trail. Your spirit will thank you for it.

My gig schedule continues Wednesday with another big corporate event. Then on Friday, April 21, I’m doing a special lunchtime appearance at Pairing Wine Bar and Restaurant in Pleasanton from 12-3 pm. Don’t come at night! I’ll be there at NOON! If you’re in the area and have an hour or two to kill, swing by for a very enjoyable lunch experience with me. I’ve really enjoyed seeing large groups of friends swinging by to my gigs, all enjoying the company, the music, the sights, and the food. Don’t miss out!

I have a few public shows you’ll want to catch in your new July Calendar. I’m finally starting up some Marriott Walnut Creek shows beginning this Saturday July 6 at 6pm. Details below.

And this Sunday July 7, after almost a year away, I finally return to the Pairings Wine Bar and Restaurant in downtown Pleasanton for a special “chill” session from 1:30-4:30pm in the afternoon. Details below.

Know too that I’m finally back with the great keyboardist-vocalist Janice Maxie-Reid on July 19 at Havana in Walnut Creek. She’s a true favorite ofaudiences around the world, so don’t miss it! Details below.

Then yet another version of the Rolando Morales Trio appearson Saturday July 27, 9-11:30pm, also at Havana in Walnut Creek. This will be the first time we play together as a trio: Grammy-winning Latin percussionist-vocalist Omar Ledezma; bassist from Arturo Sandoval, the funky Dewayne Pate; and Yours Truly on guitar, guitar synth and voice. ¡Hola, mi Gente!

After my car repairs, I did a few more gigs and then drove down to my mom’s in So Cal last Monday to join my brother visiting with his family from Michigan. They had already been there a week and were finishing up their last 4 days.

My little twin nephews are growing up, getting ready to start high school. Rocco has stretched to 5’9, Vincent about 5’7. Both had been playing a lot of hoops since I saw them last. When I told them over the phone that I was driving down to kick their butts on the basketball court, Rocco just chuckled and said, “I don’t think so.”

A couple days after I got down there, I taught Rocco (guitar) and Vincent (trumpet) an Ennio Morricone piece I arranged for them that morning to play as a duet and played the tune for my mom. They are both already quite accomplished for their ages. I think Rocco is better than I was at his age.

After working a couple hours, Vincent then said, “You wanna go out and play basketball?” They got big smiles and were ready to kick my butt. We went out into the hot sun and I schooled them. They did get a lot better, but they didn’t have a chance. I beat them 1 on 2, then we did about three 2 on 2 games with my brother in different combinations. Then I moved ever so slowly into the house and passed out for about 90 minutes on the couch. To quote Danny Glover in “Lethal Weapon,” “I’m getting too old for this shit.” And that’s an old reference.

I made it back in time for more private shows, including a very special, intimate wedding held on the beach in Montara. It was a heart-warming international gathering of love. It was an honor to play for it.

I have a combination of private and public shows all week. Try not to miss this one: This Friday July 19, 9-11:30pm, I’m finally back with the great keyboardist-vocalist Janice Maxie-Reid at Havana in Walnut Creek. With her sweet voice, funky playing and charm, she always is an audience favorite. We’ll be doing our expanded repertoire of classic R&B, soul, and Latin blends and inventions. Swing by! ¡Happy Voting Day, Mi Gente!

I’m on my way out to do the deed. And if you haven’t already, you should be out there at the polls, too. The soul of the country will be revealed. It’s going to be an interesting night…

On the music front there’s only one public show happening this week, but it’s a good one. This Saturday November 10 at Havana in Walnut Creek, about 8:30-11pm, I’m back with my dear friend Estaire Godinez on Latin percussion and voice. She’s played with George Benson and Prince. The last time out, we really stretched into new places. It was a blast testing out new muscles and surprising the crowd. We’ll see where we go this time. We even surprise ourselves! Details below.

Then in addition to my return next week to Pairings Cellars in Pleasanton on Friday November 16, I’ll also return to Havana on Saturday November 24 when I pair up with the Paraguayan violinist Carlos Reyes, who has played with Arturo Sandoval and Steve Miller. I had turned down FOUR gigs this week, two of them private, because I was scheduled to be in Kauai this week. Unfortunately, two potential hurricanes had the same idea and were working their way to the islands to hit just after I would have, so I had to pull out at the last minute.

So I’m still here in Oak-town catching up on work and clients, and resting my back and shoulder a bit before jumping back into the fray on Saturday September 15 for a special public appearance at Havana in Walnut Creek, with the great Janice Maxie-Reid on keys and vocals. We don’t get to do this often, so I’m really looking forward to playing in duet with her again in this really fun room! We’ll probably include a couple tunes for the Queen of Soul. Details below.

And the other great duets lined up include the amazing Carlos Reyes on Saturday Sept 22; and Santana rock guitarist Carlos Hernandez on Friday Sept 28, all at Havana in Walnut Creek. I hope you’re enjoying a paid day off courtesy of the American labor movement and the laws spawned from it.

Speaking of labor, my shoulders, arm and back have been screaming for a day off, so I’m giving them one. Until tomorrow.

I drop in to Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek on Tuesday September 4 out on the patio from 6-9pm for a little fun. Also to the other Maria, Maria in Danville on Friday September 7, 6-9pm out on their patio, first time in months. Details below. Those will be the only public shows of the week. All the rest are fun private events.

But I will return from those private events in time for a special public appearance at Havana in Walnut Creek, with the great Janice Maxie-Reid on keys and vocals on Saturday Sept 15. I’m really looking forward to playing in duet with her again! Details below.

And the other great duets lined up include the amazing Carlos Reyes on Saturday Sept 22; and Santana rock guitarist Carlos Hernandez on Friday Sept 28, all at Havana in Walnut Creek. ¡Hola, Mi Gente!

Summer’s winding down and I’ve got one last public date for August, and it’s a good one. This Friday August 31st, I return to Havana in Walnut Creek, this time with my Grammy-winning friend from Venezuela in tow, the great Latin percussionist-vocalist Omar Ledezma.  This marks his debut at this venue and our first time playing together in about 5 months, so we’re both looking forward to it. Don’t miss it! Details below.

My September Calendar kicks off this Saturday September 1st, when I return to the Marriott Walnut Creek Lobby Lounge and Bar for the last time of this year! It’s just the way the calendaring fell. I greatly enjoyed my debut here a couple weeks ago. It was a sweet, big room with great people. The acoustics enhanced my rich, full tone to an attentive audience and together we transformed the room into a little concert hall with guests from all around the world. I won’t be back again until next year, so please put it in your book and don’t miss it. Spread the word!

I also have some special duet gigs in September at Havana in Walnut Creek, starting with the great Janice Maxie-Reid on keys and vocals on Sat Sept 15; the amazing Carlos Reyes on Saturday Sept 22; and Santana rock guitarist Carlos Hernandez on Friday Sept 28. The year is flying by like a ghost. Are we already entering the last quarter? Did we really lose so many? Are these events really happening?

Throughout it all, I continue to perform my private and public shows throughout La Bahia and beyond, endeavoring to create good, positive feelings by sharing my music and passion. I feel grateful to still be doing so as frequently as I do.

September brings more of these blended opportunities, so please join me when you can! I’m looking forward to some great private wine country events and playing for a repeat client that should bring in around 1,500 people.

Publicly, I’m looking forward to Saturday Sept 10 from 8-11pm, when a new version of my Trio performs at Pairings Cellars, the brand new Pleasanton night spot. We miss you Toots Thieleman

We miss Toots Thieleman, by Rolando Morales

Hola, Mi Gente!

Today we lost yet another musical icon, this time in the world of jazz. The diminutive Belgian Toots Thielemans, a jazz harmonica player, guitarist and whistler, was indeed a musical giant. He lived to the age of 94 and played almost as long. “Why would I retire?” he once said. “I do what I love.”

His sweet, unique sound came from a place he described as somewhere “between a smile and a tear.” What an amazing life lead by an amazing gentleman! We’re most fortunate that he shared his unique gift with the world for so many decades. I spoke with him and saw him perform several times over the years . He was kind, humble, honest and funny. He was Quincey Jones’ favorite musician and one of the world’s musical treasures. We’ll continue to enjoy his passionate legacy. We love you, Toots.

I just completed six days in a row of private and public gigs all over La Bahia, from San Jose to Walnut Creek. They included some beautiful locales, sensuous Russian girls who wouldn’t stop dancing and even a good amount of tears from appreciative listeners. It was a really good week that left me totally spent by the time late Sunday night rolled around.

I’m wrapping up my active August with some more lovely private events and four public shows. This Friday Aug 26 from 8-11pm, I do my very first solo performance at the Pairings Cellars, the brand new Pleasanton night spot. I’m looking forward to unveiling my diverse repertoire to that new audience.

Hola, Mi Gente!

July’s political theater has helped the month scurry by. When coupled with the positive experiences of so many private events I played through last week, the month seemed but a blink of an eye. (Which reminds me… For those of you who have been asking, yes, my right eye is so much improved, but I still have an intermittent white veil that obstructs part of my vision, but that should go away within a few more weeks.)

Through it all, my August Calendar suddenly reveals itself tomorrow, Tuesday August 2nd with my first appearance in almost 6 weeks at Maria, Maria in Danville from 6-9pm. That will be my only public appearance of the week, as I will be doing only private events for the next week.

After I return, there will be plenty of public shows to chose from throughout August. Some highlights include an exciting version of my Trio performing on Saturday August 13 at the brand new Pairings Cellars in Pleasanton. The band will feature the great Paraguayan violinist Carlos Reyes, Grammy-winning Latin percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma and myself on guitar, guitar synth and voice. Details below.

Then on August 17, I’ll be doing a very rare Wednesday duet performance for you South Bay fans at the San Jose Fairmont in the Lobby Lounge from 9-Midnight. I’ll feature the delightful violinist Ms. Patricia Weiss. She has shared the stage with the Gipsy Kings. Details below.
